Questions to be asked include whether we have we presented our most recent AVG Internet Security edition with clear on screen installation and subsequent user menu options? Is the product as light on system resources as it needs to be? Does it provide the robust levels of security protection that it needs to… and is it agile and expansive enough to cover risks emanating from multiple attack sources from email to the web to social media and onwards?

AVG Rationale & Position

These are the questions that will be asked of AVG Internet Security Business Edition 2012 as we now present our “reviewers guide” to analysts, media and the public at large. It is important at this time of version update to detail the mechanics of our software’s enhancement, extension and augmentation. This not only justifies our rationale for continually enhancing AVG’s protection layers, but it also helps clarify our market positioning which is especially important for our small to medium sized business users.

The reviewers guide exists to take AVG-watchers, journalists, analysts and the complete community of Internet security specialists through the improvements that have been built into our 2012 edition business level product, which is of course now available.

Detailing the improved new administration console and the fact that AVG 2012 now consumes on average 45% less in terms of disk space, this guide makes it clear that this is protection suitable for Internet-active companies performing a wide range of online activities involving banking or purchasing transactions – as well as customer, supplier or partner communications.

Size and shape

The AVG 2012 Business Edition reviewer’s guide takes the reader through the installation and usage of all the major component elements of the AVG suite. Featuring screen shots of AVG’s System Tools functionality, set up options and the AVG’s Remote Administration Console, we explain how a user can enable simple and rapid deployment of AVG across business networks.

There are also subsections here to read up on AVG’s Community Protection Network, the Auto Fix button and our Protective Cloud Technology. We also explain how our multiple scanning engines and behavioural detection tools work to simultaneously identify emerging and previously unknown threats.

Benchmarking AVG Metrics

Featuring a complete section devoted to tangible benchmarked improvement measurements, the reviewer’s guide details the light (and still decreasing) load that AVG Internet Security has upon a user’s computer. Among the metrics available here are performance improvements including 20% less resource usage, 50% smaller download size, a 20% to 50% faster scan time and a 10% faster browser launch time for a machine with AVG installed.

This essential industry-facing background document explains that AVG Business Edition 2012 sets out to be the simplest, most tailored security software for small businesses available today. We truly believe that for businesses looking for protection without impeding performance, AVG is the most compelling product on the market. Customers can essentially set and forget — with peace of mind that we will take care of the rest while they interact in the connected world.

Media Coverage

AVG 2012 Business Edition Coverage has reached readers across almost titles with a combined circulation of over 750,000 readers — a number which is increasing every day as key trade and consumer media sources continue to analyse and examine our latest product.

As we desire to be transparent with the users of our Windows 7 Phone security app, I’d like to outline the process that we adopt when a user installs the software.

Upon installation, the “Enable Location based service” feature allows a user to locate a phone in case it is lost or stolen. This feature is immediately available to all users so a phone can be tracked if it is lost straight away; otherwise, a user will find out the feature is disabled after the phone is lost or stolen, meaning the user could not locate the phone on a map. A user may opt-out of this feature at any time.

Locating a lost phone on a map requires GPS data, which is why the app requests geo location data with this feature enabled.

Please note that by default the user’s email address box is left blank and it is up to the consumer to provide their email address for future identification by the system, but it is not mandatory to do so.

The following is a representative example of data collected from a phone when this feature is enabled or disabled.

As you can see below – no geo location data is being collected when the feature is disabled.

Over the past few days, questions have been asked about AVG’s most recent mobile security product, AVG Mobilation™for Windows Phone 7. As such, I wanted to take a moment to clarify and respond to some of the questions and comments raised in social media forums.

As soon as this product hit the market place, developers across the globe began to ask questions. We welcome those questions as the community has a strong influence on our product designs.

Firstly, there have been questions about the features and functions of the product with some commentators feeling it is a bit light on features.

When a company designs tools to support a new product in market, there is always room for growth. Criticism and comment is natural when a product enters a new market at the early stages.

That said, we moved forward because we firmly believe a product that begins the process of securing Windows Phone 7 mobile devices is a step in the right direction. We made this decision based on our key findings from our very successful security software for the Android mobile platform.

Three years ago, we were first to market with a security solution for Android®. At the time, the number of threats against the Android OS was very small.

We knew however that, like the PC market, as Android grew in popularity so would the threats against the platform.

Today our security software scans 594,892,025 SMS’s a month, finding 783,963 of them as bad/spam, we also scan over 157 million App packages a month and find 225,034 are infected with malware.

AVG believes that the Windows Phone 7 OS will continue to increase in popularity and, as it does, it will become a high value target for thieves and hackers.

For this reason, we made a strategic decision to deliver a security product to this platform in its very early days – as we did with Android. Our objective is to start Windows mobile users off on the right foot and help them create a safe and secure community.

Over time, AVG will continue to develop our product’s capabilities and believe that our user base will benefit from the investments we make in product improvement.

We worked closely with Microsoft on the development of this product. Our teams were trained by Microsoft and our software was provided to the company for review and certification prior to release. We did implement a number of requested changes provided to us by Microsoft.

Some of the current key features of our Windows Phone 7 security software include the utilization of several protection engines for both Web security and file security.

The Safe Web Surfing function helps protect users from social engineering attacks that are intended to drive them to take wrong decisions while online.

This protection engine checks the safety of a URL in case the user tries to access a malicious web site.

The Safe Search function allows users searching the web to avoid malicious web sites.

Our file scanning engine scans media files, mp3s, video and play lists and checks against a blacklist of bad files. This is a result of several “proof of concepts” disclosed in public.

Having the security engines implemented in the product, we believe we can respond to security threats targeting the Windows Phone 7 platform to protect our users, whenever such threats arrive –as we have with Android — and we are committed to continuing to develop this security product to reflect the constantly changing threat landscape.

AVG Internet Security 2012 provides robust online protection for home users. The product benefits from a dedicated team of Internet security specialists and a worldwide community of over 100 million users, who help AVG to constantly advance its feature sets and product strength.

AVG technologists have listened to our users and concentrated on producing a noticeably faster and leaner product. At 65 MB, the file size of AVG Internet Security 2012 comes in well below that of our three closest competitors despite adding 127 new features. AVG 2012 also improves upon our last edition by speeding up full disk scans by up to 50 percent and browser launches by up to 10 percent.

Engineered to work at a level appropriate to differing users’ needs, Internet Security 2012’s core role is to render viruses, spam, spyware and Trojans helpless while making identity theft, web exploits, drive-by phishing and rootkits a distant memory.

AVG Internet Security 2012 protects users while they are surfing the web and communicating on Instant Messenger (IM) services, while simultaneously securing Local Area Networks (if they exist) against hazardous system attacks.

With multi-layered (but tightly integrated) technologies, AVG users will not have to worry about identity theft, viruses, or risks associated with visiting harmful websites leaving you to shop, bank and transact with confidence, block spammers and scammers, download/share files and chat safely. Users can also enjoy peace of mind when networking on Facebook.

AVG 2012 Internet Security is built with some completely new features since our 2011 product release. New in 2012 is AVG Accelerator, which helps speed up Internet experiences by accelerating downloads and Flash videos.

Also new is AVG Advisor, which provides assistance and recommendations in case of detected memory problems caused by browser sessions where tabs have been open for a long time. It is a new proactive service that monitors the computer and provides the user with solutions on various problems they may have. This includes “overuse of memory” by Internet browsers (Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer only.)

AVG Accelerator

AVG Accelerator maximizes computer connectivity to deliver content[NNA1] .

Less time is spent waiting for videos and other content-rich files to download.

Supports Flash Videos and some other content-rich files (additional target file types will be added in subsequent releases).

On by default, can be managed in advanced settings.

Managed by advanced settings under LinkScanner®.

AVG Advisor

Research indicates that users often have browsers open for many hours (as many as 15-24 hours at a time) without knowing that these applications are constantly consuming the available memory of the PC.

Over time, available memory is reduced to a low level and this causes a computer to slow down.

AVG Advisor in a new proactive service that monitors the computer and advises the user with solutions on various problems they may have.

Prompts “overuse of memory” by Internet browsers (Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer only.)

Can be manually turned off if required.

Managed via a link from the pro-active pop-up, which opens advanced settings in tray notification.

Not only have we introduced new features such as these but we’ve also enhanced a whole category of existing tools and utilities to make sure that you never miss a beat. Here’s a list of just some of the enhancements we’ve made.

Footprint and performance is improved throughout.

Fewer processes, less memory usage, faster boot time, the AVG 2012 technology proposition is focused on actually speeding up your PC as it protects.

Web security is improved and enhances the detection of evasive web threats.

User Interface (UI) reorganized for a more intuitive look and feel.

Several UI components have been grouped together to reduce number of components in overview.

There is also the addition of default settings for advanced the “Identity Protection settings” dialogue.

AVG has fixed notification about logged in users in the restart request dialogue and the “Ignore the state of this component” option is now only available from advanced settings.

AVG’s success lies in delivering Internet Security solutions to our community of over 110 million active users worldwide. This is a huge number of connected individuals and so, naturally, with volume comes diversity. This is why AVG Free exists at one end of our product range; and AVG Premium Security exists at the other.

AVG Premium Security is an enhanced version of Internet Security 2011. Its key features focus on identity monitoring services, but it also packs additional punch with a PC analysis and optimisation solution.

Identity Monitoring

A basic reality of our Internet-connected world is that hackers want to steal users’ personal identity and credentials and then monetize this action through various illegal methods and practices.

AVG believes that prevention is always the best cure. Because of this, our Premium service is engineered to provide protection that acts before a user experiences the damaging effects of identity theft. Our extended service works in unison with our Internet Security product, which provides users with malware prevention based on signatures, heuristics and behaviour-based detection.

But even with a fully protected computer, users will register online with third party databases where personal profile data is shared (when e-shopping for example) and the problem is that these companies (or other bodies) are themselves being compromised. So no matter how secure a computer, data that resides with third parties is out of a user’s hands.

Examples here go further than electronic shopping and could include healthcare details held with a doctor, schools, universities, member’s cards for retail stores, local clubs, local councils, utility companies etc.

A user’s address on its own is not much use, but if hackers start to get more information and build up multiple attributes of information about a person then they might be able to gauge a person’s salary, where they travel to and how often etc. Even credit card number or online banking credentials by themselves worth to hackers a fortune.

AVG Premium addresses this identity-monitoring problem with a service driven by a group of researches who spend their time examining hacker servers, hacker websites, online auctions of stolen data and other cyber-criminal resources to look for stolen information. If an AVG Premium Security customer’s information is found in such places, then the Premium service will inform the customer that this identity has been stolen and help to take further actions to mitigate risk before any damage is actually caused.

Of course, the stolen data may have been stolen, but not yet been used – and so AVG Premium Security will advise a user proactively whether they should change their password, revoke their credit cards or provide other methods and actions to address the problem of the stolen data from the third party. AVG Premium Security’s ability to act “before” the theft has been acted upon sets it apart as truly unique in the Internet Security marketplace.

Identity monitoring in AVG Premium Security goes beyond securing your computer, it also proactively monitors the dark side of the Internet looking if someone has your identity and help you to prevent a misuse of that.

PC Performance

Not only does AVG Premium Security feature identity monitoring, there is also an enhancement designed to optimise a user’s PC performance. AVG PC Analyzer included in AVG Internet Security 2011 scans and looks for problems, but does not fix them on the spot.

To fix identified errors, users need to download AVG PCTune up. This service is available to any user free of charge for one day on a trial basis. Once downloaded, AVG PCTune up will scan and fix any errors found on a user’s PC.

AVG Premium features AVG Quick Tune, which does even more than PC Analyzer; a user can run scans immediately and recurrently for as long as they like and fix them immediately there and then from inside the application itself.

More information on Premium Security can be found at www.avg.com/Premium-Security

MultiMi™ is a new desktop application designed to integrate and manage a user’s digital interactions. Encompassing social media and cloud-based services as well as traditional email-based communications, MultiMi is a new connection hub for our digital lives.

So how does it work?

Bringing together several communications channels into one intelligently integrated dashboard is a complex process. But the mechanics behind this process are performed by a light autonomous piece of software that knows how to EXTRACT and POST information to the services the user wants.

MultiMi works by a process of defined steps, which can be summarized as follows:

MultiMi asks what kind of connection protocol is being used e.g. IMAP etc.

MultiMi establishes the input/output parameters required to communicate

MultiMi asks what kind of authentication measures need to be met

MultiMi asks what kind of legitimate information can be exchanged

MultiMi asks what length, size and shape of data can be exchanged

MultiMi examines who is sharing this information

MultiMi then integrates and aggregates the information found into a common view

Users can, for example, drag a tweet into an email, or drop email photo attachments directly into Flickr or Picasa. MultiMi integrates multiple channels seamlessly.

The power of MultiMi stems from the simplicity of the framework behind the application itself. Its ability to integrate data in the most scalable manner sets it apart from social network aggregators; all the information is brought together, digested and presented in a way that allows the user to move data around in a more manageable manner than if it were standing alone.

Download MultiMi Factsheet

Taking control of content – empowering users

MultiMi’s connection with AVG makes a lot of sense. As users open their doors to what is effectively a massive throng of guests all at once (i.e. potentially unchecked pieces of information flowing from numerous social media and communication channels) AVG LinkScanner® security technology is in place to give users the peace of mind that any links they click will have been scanned for safety beforehand.

Each individual service or ‘element’ (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Flickr etc.) needs to be temporally ‘interrogated’ so that MultiMi can ask what the legitimate time frames to communicate with that service are. Conversely, MultiMi also allows the user to specify the frequency at which they receive communication from each element.

Eidan Apelbaum, CEO of Zbang It, says that users generally demand simplicity (99% of the population does, at least). However, more technically savvy users often want to have more interaction; although most applications come with default settings that many users accept, some users still want to customize their experiences with these apps. MultiMi gives the latter group the opportunity to tweak settings to suit their needs.

“We can modify the MultiMi application during its live runtime at the back end so if Facebook (or another element) suddenly starts to offer a modified service at some level, we can adapt to build this new update’s requirements into MultiMi’s live service in real time,” says Apelbaum.

MultiMi’s power is derived from its simplicity, as well as its ability to handle complex interaction technologies and manage them intuitively to present a whole that is greater than the sum of the parts.

AVG’s hard working product team have managed to resolve a longstanding issue with AVG’s LinkScanner technology dramatically slowing down browsing on Facebook.

The product team have been collecting the feedback, reports and information that our community have been providing on the AVG Free Forum. Our community feedback has played a large part in the fixing of this issue, so a big thanks to all of you who sent in your logs and reports to help us solve the problem.

The issue, which was brought up in several Feedback Updates, has been resolved with the latest patch (1388) which should be downloaded and installed automatically by your AVG program.

At AVG we are working hard to take your feedback and your issues into account, which is why we’re also happy to announce that AVG Safe Search is now compatible with Firefox 5.

Firefox, the open source browser, has seen a large resurgence in popularity after many dropped it for the less process-heavy Chrome. It’s important for us at AVG to keep our users secure and protected regardless of their browsing choice so we’re pleased to now offer Safe Search for Firefox 5.

If you’re looking for more information on our previous fixes and patches, you can view the version release notes here. If you’d like to get involved to help us improve AVG you can get involved at the AVG Free Forum and watch out for the AVG Feedback Updates on the blogs.

With the launch of AVG Family Safety, we go over some of the features that make it easier than ever to keep you children safer as they discover the internet.

Kids these days are spending more and more time online, whether it is surfing the Internet on their laptops, or playing games on their mobiles or smartphones.

To illustrate the point, a study by the Kaiser Family Foundation in January 2010, showed that American kids now spend more than half of their waking lives using electronic devices connected to the Internet and television.

Therefore, as a parent, protecting them while they are online can be a tough task. The Internet is a wonderful tool, one of the most powerful we have, but we also know that the Internet is home to a lot of content which simply isn’t appropriate for children.

So how do you strike that balance between looking after your children and being engaged in their development and letting them go out and learn for themselves?

Here are some practical tips that might help you.

Speak openly with your children about their friends online and the websites they use. Open the conversation with an enquiry about the ‘newest trends’ or latest websites.

Have the family computer in a location that can be easily viewed by other family members – communal living areas are ideal.

If you suspect your child is being bullied or victimized online, contact the relevant help line, like for instance: www.bullying.co.uk, http://www.stopbullying.gov and http://www.cyberbullying.us

Discuss with your children what personal details they think are acceptable to share, and let them know why some details are better kept private.

Log on yourself! Become familiar with the sites and social networks your child is using. This will help you understand what your child might be doing online, and enable you to identify possible dangers before they occur.

In our series of podcast guides on keeping your children safe online with Rona Renner, of US child safety organisation Childhood Matters, stresses the importance of parents being involved, staying committed and connected and being engaged with their children. These podcasts will be available on AVG blogs over the next week.

Parents can of course use security software to help keep their children safe online too. For example, AVG’s Family Safety is a one-stop solution to online parenting troubles with a whole host of tools and utilities that can help you warn, block or simply track your kids online. Only you know what’s right for your kids and so it’s up to you to set the boundaries.

Here is an overview of AVG’s Family Safety and the different ways it can help you keep your kids safe online.

Set up profiles by child

Create unique logins and accounts for every child, enable Block, Warn, or Monitor modes according to their age and maturity, and adjust them over time as your household’s understanding of Internet threats increases.

Keep an eye on content

Protect your children from illegal, violent, or sexual material by enabling 58 categories of protection spanning over 60 million websites. Know what your children are looking for by monitoring searches on popular engines like Google, Yahoo! and Bing. Keep them from being exposed to questionable words, terms, and phrases by filtering their search terms.

Track social media activity

Share files, folders, and photos and put an end to online predators and cyberbullying by filtering objectionable material from over 80 social networks like Facebook and Bebo, restricting chat rooms and functions, and monitoring instant messages and social network threads.

Manage time & apps

Make sure your children aren’t spending too much time online by scheduling or limiting their internet access. Restrict questionable software by monitoring inappropriate applications and blocking PC games with mature themes.

Stay informed

Know what your children are up to by receiving detailed, easy-to-read text and email reports, staying apprised of their searches, posts, and downloads, and learning if questionable sites are being accessed intentionally or visited by mistake.

Access on the fly

Protect your children remotely by controlling group or individual content from your mobile device, and stay informed of their online activities by receiving detailed reports on your cell phone or work PC.

Pricing

The cost for a Family Safety package is only $19.99* for a year’s subscription. The price includes AVG Family Safety installed on three devices and extra devices can be added for an additional $5 per device per year.

AVG Mobile Security Threat alert: New trojan designed for Android smartphones emerges.

Mobile security threat alert – Issued: 15 Feb. 2011 18:30 CET

AVG Mobile Solutions has alerted smartphone users to a potentially hazardous new Trojan targeting Android devices. The “ADRD” Trojan targets Android users and is part of a Chinese multi-platform network Xiaxia.com. AVG report that a similar threat from the same botnet targeting other smartphone platforms such as Symbian S60.

As it infects a device, the ADRD trojan registers itself to sensors of network activity, alarms and various other OS events. Once fully installed, the trojan feeds back the phone’s unique IMEI/IMSI number, with each infected smartphone becoming part of the botnet.

No further details are available at this stage however, users of AVG’s free Android antivirus product ANTIVIRUSFree are already protected through its cloud-based detection algorithms and do not need an update to their software.

More information on the ADRD will follow but for information on downloading AVG’s free antivirus app for Android phones visit the AVG website.

We'd love to know what you think about keeping your smartphone safe – what steps will you take? Do think it's necessary? On top of this, when their free subscription of AVG Anti-Virus (with a retail value of $34.99) has lapsed, they will then have an option to renew their license at a discounted price.

AVG will work together with Digital Delivery Networks, Inc. (DDNi), a PC customer?experience company, to build a mini-CD preloaded with the antivirus which will be packaged and distributed with the AMD processors.

“The new year signifies a fresh start not only for consumers, but also their PCs within their home network. In fact, consumers often take this opportunity to upgrade multiple devices and boost their machines’ performance for the year ahead,” said Rocco Donnino, senior vice president of Global Strategic Alliances, AVG Technologies. “However, the safety of their digital memories remains as important-as-ever, which is why this partnership continues to support AVG strategy.

AVG renewal policy - clarification on our policy

Due to some recent press speculation we wanted to clarify our renewal procedures, so our valued community of users are clear that our procedures are.

Some allege if a user’s AVG license expires on December 31, but the user renews on December 1, that user loses a month’s worth of the protection they paid for.

Allow us to clarify our long-standing renewal policy in order to address this concern:

When a customer renews an AVG product before expiration, the new subscription doesn’t start until after the original subscription has expired. This is how it is now, and this is how it’s been since 2004.

So, if your AVG protection is set to expire on December 31, but you renew on December 1, it will still be as if you had renewed on December 31.

Now in the case of license upgrades—where one product is let go in favor of a more comprehensive one—AVG only charges the difference in cost between the original product and the new upgraded product. We even offer big price breaks for users who renew for more than one year.

AVG fix for computers running on Windows64-bit operating systems - latest information and more to follow

Note this post was updated on 6.12.2010

Latest update: It does appear that this issue has affected computers running on the Windows 64-bit operating systems and not just Windows 7 64-bit platforms. Apologies for any confusion. I have removed the Windows 7 references as a strike through looks like a continental seven and may remain confusing.

We are sorry to report that we have identified a potential conflict between one of our recent updates (3292) and a significant number of systems running on the Windows 64-bit operating systems that has caused systems to go into an infinite crash loop.

We regret any inconvenience this is causing our customers and we are working quickly to resolve this issue.

It appears that the problems are most prevalent in Windows 64-bit operating systems. This is because a wrong update file is being served into the product. We removed the update immediately after the problem was identified and will release a program to ensure that the fix is completed automatically as soon as possible.

In the interim, we encourage our Windows 64-bit customers to do the following: Watch this video or follow the instructions below this video to help you solve this problem.

As the definitions update file was removed from the update servers, users who are running Windows 64-bit operating systems and have not downloaded and installed this update [3292] are ok .

Users who have downloaded the update, prompted for a restart, but did not apply the restart yet are advised to manually delete the avgrs[x|a].exe and avgchsv[x|a].exe file from the system.

Users who have downloaded the update and applied the system restart should follow the instructions provided on our website: http://forums.avg.com/ww-en/avg-free-forum?sec=thread&act=show&id=132999#post_132999

Read these FAQs: PRO FAQ 4079: System crash after the recent AVG 2011 update 3292 (BSOD)
FREE FAQ 4080: System crash after the recent AVG 2011 update 3292 (BSOD)

More information will be available shortly on this blog where we will keep you updated with this issue. Many apologies to anyone experiencing difficulty with this problem.
